#IWD FAQs
Why is there an International Women's Day?
International Women's Day (IWD) started because of the disparity in rights between men and women. While existing for centuries, at the turn of the 20th century women finally stood up to the patriarchal system that had oppressed them for so long. They initially demanded better pay, shorter working hours, and the right to vote.
Since then, IWD has evolved to not only become a day of focussed campaigning for equality, gender parity and essential healthcare rights, but also one of celebration for all that women have achieved so far. From scientific discoveries to sporting excellence, from political progression to fundamental rights previously only given to men.
What date is International Women's Day?
IWD takes place on 8th March each year.
Does International Women's Day have a colour theme?
What flowers would be good for International Women's Day?
The best flower to gift in a bouquet for International Women's Day would have to be the iris. This is because it holds many relevant meanings, including courage, faith, purity, valour, victory and conquest. Other appropriate bouquets would have flowers like carnations, gerberas, and solidago - these flowers symbolise strength.
